Organizational Culture

Culture is embedded in every aspect of our lives. It influences our thoughts, behavior and values. Work your way down this page to see the readings and the activities you will need to complete for this week.

This week we will cover definitions and levels of organizational culture.

Begin by reading this textbook chapter. Pay special attention to the three levels of culture - artifacts, values and assumptions.

The link to the textbook:

Then move on to read about Basic Assumptions.

Basic Assumptions

"To understand a group's culture, you must attempt to get at its shared basic assumptions and understand the learning process by which such basic assumptions evolve." (Schein, 32)

Assumption is the foundation for understanding of culture change. In this section, you will gain a further understanding of the concept of basic assumptions as it applies to organizational culture.

Be careful not to confuse assumptions in the contemporary sense with the anthropological meaning as it is ascribed to it in culture studies. In the contemporary definition, an assumption is a belief that something is true or accepted as true, often without proof. For example, "In my company, people assume that the service is only offered to military" or "An assumption is that if you work hard you will be recognized".

As you gain an understanding of organizational cultural assumptions, think not what an individual or you personally believe to be true. Instead, you will want to view basic assumptions from an organizational perspective; what the organizational group believes to be true and treats the assumption as a reality.

Basic assumptions are:

• shared by the group

• taken for granted by group members

• Often treated as nonnegotiable

• extremely difficult to change

• created to solve a problem

• deeply embedded, hard to recognize the assumption from within

• usually unconscious

• constitute the essence of culture

Next, please read the attached article. You will want to pay close attention to the table on p. 5.Basic Assumptions

The article refers to Kluckhohn and Kluckhohn's original study, where basic assumptions are called value orientations.

Activity #2 - Organizational Culture

Based on your reading of the textbook chapter, describe and give an example of an artifact, a value, and an assumption in your organization. The attached chart may help you identify some basic assumptions.

Activity #3 - Cultural Sensitivity

INCA SURVEY

Based on your readings and your self assessment (INCA survey) share your scores, then share some thoughts on what you understand to be cultural sensitivity and where you are in terms of development of your own cultural sensitivity. This is more of a reflection post and you do not need to respond to other colleagues.

Activity 4

There may only be two underlying assumptions and have everything to do with the locus of control.

Do you think you have an internal locus of control where the world works exactly how you expect it to?

Colonel Kilgore has an internal locus of control perspective:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jts9suWIDlU

While those around him have an external locus of control.

Or do you "operate" with the perspective that the locus of control is external - where nature is working around you and you are subject to the forces you don't control.

Are these perspectives situational?

Activity 5

Underlying assumptions are not east to identify.

These are not "guesses" - they are the underlying influences that drive your decisions and direct your qualitative judgments on situations.

They help you determine the "good" "bad" "weird" "strange" "satisfying" ""happy" and all the other reactions you have to events and episodes in your life - the underlying assumptions reflect culture and are manifested in behaviors and/or thoughts in any give situation.
So, can you identify your personal underlying assumptions? What are they? (you really have to dig into your psyche to find them)

Activity 1: Marketing research follows the scientific method. There are some variants to how this process is described. List and describe in your own words, the steps of a scientific process.

Activity 2: Research begins with a problem or a question. Good research builds off a good question. A good question is NOT:

a) a yes or no question

b) something we already know

c) something that is common sense (my grandmother could tell you that)

Begin to think of a problem and a question that you might want to address in your research study.
