After talking to the owner, he agreed to choose asphalt. Also, based on the research the asphalt pavement is cheaper, having less maintenance and is easier to install. Furthermore , the amount of asphalts as calculated is 963 tons and by using thickness of 1.5 inch in surface and 4.5 inch in base .

Sidewalks:

We are going to have two sidewalks on the parking lots, one in front of the building with width of 5 foot and the other one between the parking lots with width of 9 foot. However, that the mobile municipal code required to set the sidewalk area at least 6 feet in front of the building.

Spaces:

The area for 3 office building story is 112,500 square foot .and according to the Parking Generation 3rd edition we are going to use 400 square foot for each space and we came up with 282 parking spaces included 7 spaces for handicap and one for van accessible.  Using the standard dimension with 9 foot width and 18 foot long for each parking except the van accessible parking space with 9 foot width and 20 foot long. Also, we are going to have a truck loading area at the back of the building.

Entrances and exits:  The property will have 3 entrances and exits as calculated and drawn. One of them at Old shell road with 38 foot and two of them at Cody road with 24 foot and 38 foot according to the access management manual. The problem was to find if we going to need a turning lane from Cody road to the property and What we found from traffic Engineering of the city of mobile that we have 21,400 vehicles from Hillcrest to Cody road and this study recorded on 10/03/2013. Also, form Airport Blvd. to Cody road we have 13,500 vehicles and this study recorded on 11/20/2013. These are for 24 hours vehicle counts.

However, after calculation, I found that we are going to need the turning lane from Cody road to our property but designing that lane is beyond the scope of our project but we are going to leave an extra space between Cody road and the parking lots to provide the turning lane we are going to need. Here is the calculation shown the need of the turning lane

Calculation peak hour flow from Hillcrest to Cody road

21,400/24 = 892 vehicles

(892) * (.12) = 107 vehicles

107 + 892 = 999 vehicles for both directions

Calculation peak hour flow from Airport Blvd to Cody road

13,500/24 = 563 vehicles

(563) * (.12) = 68 vehicles

68 + 563 = 631 vehicles for both directions

In conclusion, there are 282 spaces including handicaps and van accessible. Asphalts will be chosen for the parking lots as the best pavements and the property will have 3 entrances and exits with consideration of adding a turning lane at Cody road with 12 feet width. the driveways between the parking are 24 feet and the setback should be 30 feet from other lands as mobile municipal code required .we still have many tasks that's need to be complete relating to the parking lots design such as thickness of the pavement, signage, requirements for trees and lights and green features but this is going to be done on time as planed with the owner.
