History of UseAnd What have We Learned from this? Briefly describe the origins-where did alcohol originally come from? What are previous patterns of alcohol use in the USA? How much and how long has alcohol been used here? How was alcohol part of our American culture?

Describe Prohibition; how long did it last, what happened to alcohol use, what other problems arose, what did we learn from this? How did drinking patterns change when prohibition was removed? What are some current laws, regulations and cultural norms about drinking in the USA?

Current Trends and Patterns of use in the US

How many people or what percentage of the population are using alcohol now? See the resources cited below to find current use patterns, treatment statistics for most drugs. If available, include information (briefly) about the impact on society (examples: drunk driving statistics, crime, number of deaths per year, other relevant data)

Resources:

National Institute of Drug Abuse: NIDA= http://drugabuse.gov/nidahome.html

Look for "infofacts" on each drug for basic information and patterns of use

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, (NIAAA) National Institute of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS

Available http://www.nih.gov/niaaa

Also look for National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reports.

Reports usually cite recent use patterns by these 2 categories: Lifetime use (have you ever tried ____ at least once in your life) and regular users (have you used _____in past month). Life time use generally reflects what percent of the population has ever tried a drug. Past month users generally reflect people who are using the drug regularly, and may or may not have a problem with it. Sometimes there is information about new first time users or initiates. This information indicates whether the rate of use is going up or down.

Cite your sources of information! Properly cite your resources.
