Personal and Professional Code of Ethics Worksheet Things to think about before you develop your Personal and Professional Code of Ethics step by step These exercises will help you develop your personal and professional code of ethics. Ideally, you will work on these over time and not try to list everything all in one attempt. Keep these steps with you and think about them. As new words or phrases come to you write them down. Step One: How would you describe yourself? Write down words and phrases the best describe who you are and what you do. Example: smart, outgoing, independent, funny, athletic, teacher, dependable, stressed out, tasked oriented, go to person, takes on too many projects at one time, stubborn, etc. Step Two: Ask at least two people to list five words or phrases they would use to describe you. If the words and phrases they used are different from the words and phrases you wrote down, add the new words and phrases to your list. Example: conscientious, open-minded, optimistic, encouraging, intelligent, but not pretentious, etc. Step Three: Think about you at work. If you are not currently working, think about how you want to act at work. How do you interact with your coworkers, supervisors, and your clients? Write down all that is good and not so good about your work habits. Example: I arrive at work on time, I tend to gossip about co-workers, I promptly return phone calls and emails, I meet my deadlines, I’m usually five minutes late coming back from lunch, etc. Step Four: Make a list of the beliefs/rules you use to guide your decision making. It does not have to be in any order of importance. Example: don’t waste time, make time for rest, treat others as you would have them treat you, etc. Step Five: Think about the ethical beliefs you just wrote down. Why do you believe these statements? Write down any favorite quotes, texts, and/or Bible verses that you use to guide your beliefs/rules. Example: Don’t waste time – my time is valuable and there is so much to do. Wasting time leads to more work down the road. Make time for rest. – I’m so tired all of the time. I would feel better if I got more sleep. Treat others as you would have them treat you. Luke 6:27-31 "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Step Six: Use what you have written for Steps 1-5 to complete your personal and professional code of ethics assignment.
