Scenario 1: Managing the Performance of a Large and Widely Spread-out Workforce
The Situation:
We have a large campus (over 33 acres) that is composed of numerous buildings. The list is as follows:
- "Casgrain" Building
- "Tower" Building
- Toldo Neurobehavioural Institute
- "Emara" Building
- Withdrawal Management Services
- Regional Children's Centre
- ACT Team - off site
- Residential Treatment Centre - off site
Most buildings house both administrative offices, and a combination of in-patient and out-patient programs. This includes patient care units. Staffing for these areas is complex and multidisciplinary. The staff that support these areas include environmental services (sometimes referred to as "Housekeeping" or "Janitorial Services"). In fact, these are semi-skilled positions that require a working knowledge of cleaning, infection control and universal precautions. Because our campus is so spread out, the management and supervisory staff find it difficult to monitor staff performance. As an organization, we place tremendous value on engaging with front line staff. It is a challenge, however, when you have 30 staffs are working per day (80 staff members (part-time) in total ) and 3 supervisors (full-time) across our vast campus.
Questions to be Answered:
- How can we efficiently supervise staff members that are spread out over 8 buildings with just 3 supervisory staff?
