Topic: Why do people attend college?
People attend college for many different reasons. I believe that the most common reasons are to secure their future with high-paying jobs, to build their confidence, and to learn about diverse interests.
Career preparation is probably the primary reason that people go to college. Today, many career or employment opportunities require specialized skills, knowledge and practical training that only a college-level education can provide. With a college degree, students can get better-paying jobs which in turn will enable them to have a better lifestyle.
Students also attend college to develop their confidence. As you get into college, you will step out of your comfort zone and be required to do things that might initially make you cringe. You will learn how to better understand people and communicate with different personalities more effectively. The college environment can also force you to develop discipline and good habits like resourcefulness, overcoming procrastination, or being well-organized.
Aside from getting a good job or gaining more confidence, the goal of many college students is to learn about diverse interests. For most of elementary and high school education, you may not have had a chance to be around other cultures. College is often a mix of many different people from many different walks of life. Being exposed to a college culture can help students expand their horizons.
In conclusion, most people attend college because they need to be qualified to get a high-paying job in the future. Moreover, they also want to build their confidence in preparation for life or to explore interests from other people to become more knowledgeable.
