Part of a Network Administrators job is to troubleshoot problems. In this lab you will use both ping and tracert to discover how long it is taking to connect to a website. You will also discover what route (hops between servers) will be taken to get to the requested website. If you have not already watched the related videos above, please do so now.

Lab 4

1. You must do the following steps on two different computers on two different networks. For example, you can do these steps on a school computer and then do them again on your home computer. You could also do them on a school computer (on the school network) and then on your laptop connected to the student wireless access within the school.

2. Use the search box within your operating system to find your command line interface. Enter 'cmd' for the search value. Click the resulting link. It should then open up a command line window similar to what you saw in the videos.

3. Type in "ping www.google.com" and hit your enter key. You should see the results of hops made on the Internet to get to the server hosting www.google.com. Take a screen shot (see below) of the results and paste them into a word document. Make sure the results can be seen clearly in the picture. If it times out, repeat the process until you get results that do not time out.

4. Return back to the command window and type "tracert www.google.com" and hit your enter key. You should see more detailed results of the hops needed to get to the server hosting www.google.com. Take a screen shot (see below) of the results and paste them into the same word document. Make sure the results can be seen clearly in the picture. If it times out repeat the process until you get results that do not time out.

5. Label the the results from steps 3 and 4 with the location that you made the attempt (such as 'home', or 'school').

6. Repeat steps 3 & 4 on another network (see #1). Label the results with the location that you made the attempt.

7. View your results, and note the differences. Complete the following questions in the same word document. A. What differences do you see in the results between ping and tracert? B. What differences do you see in the results between the two different networks (locations)? C. Why are there differences in the results between the two locations?

8. Place your name at the top of your word document and save is as "lab4".

9. Place the document in the dropbox (below) before the due date. *** To take a screen copy, hold the ctrl key (lower left corner of the keyboard) and the prntscrn key (upper right corner of the keyboard) at the same time. Then go to your word document and select 'paste' the screen should appear. You can also 'paste' your picture into a photo management tool (like Microsoft Paint) to crop the picture if it is difficult to see the results.
