Part 1

For Part 1 of the course paper you will need to select a film or television series to analyze sociologically.   You will address 3 areas:  the historical/social context of the film, the major ideas or issues presented, and the film purpose.  This draft should be 1-2 pages in length.

Descriptions for Content Criteria

Historical/ Social context (50 points):  Context refers to the immediate social and physical environment in which life happens. Consider the following questions:

What is the time period (year, era) within the film or series?

What relevant major events took place during that time?  Are the events connected to your film?

What were some of the beliefs, norms, and values (culture) of the time period?

How does the culture of the time period impact the behavior and ideas presented in the film or series?

If using a futuristic film, use the current time period (2015) to make assumptions about why the "future" looks the way that it does in the film.  Refer to relevant events, culture, and ideologies of our current time period that have shaped the future.

Avoid including irrelevant information in this section.  Historical events should only be mentioned if they are directly connected to events or issues in the film/series.  Synthesize and summarize the most important and relevant historical events and conditions that shape the film.

Major Ideas/Issues (25 points):  This paragraph should specifically state the most important ideas and issues of your film/series.  Think critically about the most significant themes in the film.  What shapes and/or complicates the lives of the characters?   Avoid one word responses.  For example:  One of the major issues presented in the film is social class.  Avoid vague responses.  For example:  One of the major ideas in the film is that things change.  Avoid simplistic responses.  For example:  One of the major ideas in the film is that life can be hard.

Purpose (25 points):  In this paragraph, consider the following:  What direct or indirect message(s) does the film convey?  Are there certain actions the film suggests that its audiences take (based on the ideas and behaviors portrayed)?  In essence, contemplate why the film was made.  What is the intended (or implied) effects/implications of the film?  Use examples (2-3) from the film to help explain what you perceive to be the film's purpose.

You are strongly encouraged to begin this draft right away.  Do not hesitate to contact me personally or via email for assistance.  The Writing Lab located in the Center for Academic Success (D120) is a great resource as well.  This paper is meant to be challenging.  You will have to think deeply and critically to do well on this paper.  When contacting me for assistance, you will have to show that you have read the materials thoroughly and have at least attempted work on your own.
