Part 1:-

The first section following the introduction

Throughout the six sections of this chapter, what is Schlosser's argument? Your account is a detailed explanation of this argument, which is conveyed throughout these different sections we have been reading.

What are the major themes of this chapter? Can you identify some consistent topics, unifying ideas, or motifs that enable Schlosser to create impressions upon the reader and clarify his argument? Clarify these themes and explain them using specific evidence from the text. Can I illustrate that this story of McDonald's (and other American corporations') ‘global realization' is a disturbing mix of entertainment and politics? In the end (of his chapter), is he even talking about fast food? "Yes, but. . . there's more." Explain.

What ideas/themes/topics can account for ALL of the material in this chapter? Asserting that Schlosser's main argument is that McDonald's is bad unfortunately falls well short of a comprehensive thesis that makes cohesive ALL of the material in this chapter.

You won't be able to include every single move he makes, obviously. What do you think are his most important moves/sections/examples? Explain what a particular move means in terms of supporting Schlosser's argument. Put together your "highlight reel" of his strongest minor claims/examples/etc.: That's your account.

A "C" paper (or worse) is pretty vague, shows signs of understanding, but the articulation (writing) is underdeveloped, rough, and unclear. There is a weak use of the text and the paper lacks proofreading. A solid/strong "B" or "A" paper articulates, thoughtfully, how Schlosser manages to make such a compelling argument about American capitalism and one of its major strongholds: fast food. The student shows good use of the text (uses quotes) and explains how this evidence supports his main argument. Clarity is king.

Part 2: GATHERING INFORMATION AND MANAGING SOURCES

Length : 1 to 1 1/2 pages.

This section follows your account of Eric Schlosser's chapter, "Global Realization."

Select one outside text that makes an argument connecting with Schlosser's text. Use this text to illustrate, clarify, extend, or complicate one of the arguments advanced by Schlosser. Make sure that the text you select can be used to establish valid points of connection with the arguments in "Global Realization." The goal is to see Schlosser in the context of having a conversation on the issues presented in his text. Your essay should not aim to prove or disprove his theories, but explore ways in which they can be clarified or identify places in which more questions could be asked.

Criteria for Evaluation: Successful papers will:
1. signal the topic and give a clear indication of how the section will proceed

2. locate claims and/or evidence from 1 outside source that connect with Schlosser's argument

3. analyze these claims/evidence in order to show how they illustrate, clarify, extend, complicate arguments found in "Global Realization"

4. use an effective structure that carefully guides the reader from one idea to the next and be thoroughly edited so that sentences are readable and appropriate for an academic paper

Key learning outcomes: Construct an account of an author's project and argument and carry out small, focused research tasks to find information that helps clarify, illustrate, extend or complicate that argument; use appropriate reference materials, including a dictionary, in order to clarify their understanding of an argument.
