A father of one of your students makes an appointment to see you about his child's grades. He indicates that he is divorced from the child's mother (the custodial parent and he does not approve of the mother's lack of discipline). He is planning on going to court to get custody, and he wants you to testify to the child's lack of progress academically. He feels that the teachers as well as your site supervisor do not keep him  as informed as they should.

As he talks, he gets visibly more upset. How do you handle this?

You are leading a classroom guidance session on suicide that is integral to your internship contract and the goals of your school counseling training program. Your principal receives an emotional call from a parent. There has been a recent suicide in the family and the discussion in class has opened some deep wounds. As a result, the parent is angry that this topic is being discussed in school. How would you handle this situation?

Part 2:

Read and respond to the following situation and discuss your response with your peers. A critical incident happened in a classroom, in which one student was seriously harmed by another and you have been involved with counseling the victim. Staff and parents are concerned about the actions taken regarding this incident and ask you to tell them specifics about the incident and how it is being handled. Flow do you respond?

Part 3:

Read and respond to the following scenario and discuss your answers with your peers. It is Monday morning, and you are speaking with a student's mother who is requesting that you see her child for school anxiety issues. You further explore with the student's mother what her concerns are about the student as you agree to work with the student. At the end of the conversation, the student's mother adds, "I would  like you to call me each week to let me know what she is talking about with you:' What do you do?

Part 4:

Read the following scenarios and decide on the classroom management strategy you would use in response to the situation.

You are conducting a classroom guidance lesson on study skills in a fourth-grade classroom and you notice that Christina seems disengaged and uninterested despite the other students being actively involved in the lesson. When you quietly walk to her desk to prompt her to stay focused on the activity, she immediately starts to sob loudly and uncontrollably.

What would you do?

Roberto is a ninth grader with whom you have developed rapport during the short period of time you have been interning in the high school. You are scheduled to talk about career planning in his social studies class, and as you are providing directions to the class, you notice Roberto talking to one of his peers. When you politely remind the class to pay attention to the instructions, Roberto yells, "I think this is a stupid lesson and you don't know what you are even talking about:' After this outburst the class starts snickering at his comments.

How do you handle this?

Part 5:

Read and respond to the following scenario and discuss your answers with your peers. Parents have called you to request a conference regarding their son. According to his parents, his grades are dropping, he seems unfocused, and his behavior in the classroom and with his peers is becoming a concern. They want you to tell them what is wrong with their son and how it can be fixed. How would you prepare for this conference?

Part 6:

Read and respond to the following scenario and discuss your responses with those of your peers.

You are part of a parent conference in which the language arts teacher mentions that the student has written something in a journal that has the teacher very concerned. The teacher mentions that a journal entry alludes to the fact that the student seems to be afraid of someone at home. The parent gets very angry and leans across the table in a threatening manner when the journal entry is mentioned. You, your site supervisor, and the teacher are the only ones in the room with this parent. How do you handle this situation?
