Part -1:

Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio, video, and animation in addition to traditional media (i.e., text, graphics drawings, and images). I can also say that is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally. Multimedia Application is an Application which uses a collection of multiple media sources e.g. text, graphics, images, sound/audio, animation and/or video.

Part -2:

1. Browse through the web-pages of various High Performance Computing research groups and find one research project that is most interesting to you. On example of such research groups is the Institute for Data Analysis and Visualization at UC-Davis: http://graphics.cs.ucdavis.edu/research

Once you found an interesting project, provide the title of the project, the names of the main researchers involved, and their affiliations. Write a short report on this project which includes: a- A short description of the project (a couple of paragraphs) b- The URL of the project webpage. c- Briefly describe the reasons why you have found this project interesting. d- In your own terms, explain the problem that the researchers wanted to address e- Discuss what you think are the strengths of this project f- Discuss what you think may be shortcomings, or problems with this approach.

2. The following are some of the most important scientific journals in the Parallel Computing and/or HPC research field: - Parallel Computing (Elsevier) - International Journal of Parallel Programming (Springer) - Transactions on Parallel Computing (ACM)

Search for these journals in Google or other search engines.

Choose two of these journals and submit a report with the following:

a. List the research topics that the journal editors publish.

b. Pick three topics and write a short description on the topic.

c. Browse through the contents of this year's issues and identify one article from each of the two journals that you find most interesting.

For each article provide:

a. Its complete citation (see example below for citation) containing authors, title, where it appeared, pages, year, etc.,

Example: A. Tavakkoli, M. Nicolescu, G. Bebis, M. Nicolescu, "Non-Parametric Statistical Background Modeling for Efficient Foreground Region Detection", International Journal of Machine Vision and Applications, Springer-Verlag, April 2008.

b. Briefly describe the main problem addressed and why you have found it interesting.

c. Classify to which topic from the aforementioned areas (in part (a) of this question) this paper belongs.

d. In your own words discuss the advantages of the approach that the researchers of this paper took to address the problem posed in the paper.

e. Do you see any shortcoming, or areas that you might be able to advance the work?
