1. Aim

This coursework aims to develop a number of key capabilities required in the mechanical product innovation process. Specifically these include: creativity, management, experimental methods, analysis and synthesis, and the application of information technology tools. The aim will be met by tackling a product innovation project based on satisfying a requirement associated with a mechanical application.

2. Introduction

A marketing opportunity has been identified to develop a go-kart drivetrain to facilitate higher power output

3. Task

Working in groups of 4 you should produce a concept solution for an upgraded drivetrain to deliver additional power to a go-kart wheels. It should be assumed the power is increased by 50%, but may be determined more precisely form the characteristics of a chosen engine

• Initial product assessment. Identify loadings, component material, manufacture and approximate costs
• Function Analysis Systems Technique (FAST) Diagram
• Quality Function Deployment (QFD) Diagram
• Product Design Specification to BS7373 (PDS)
• Illustration of improved sustainability
• Development and description of initial concepts
• Systematic selection of preferred concept
• Communication: Quality of report & technical relevance to task
• Peer Mark Assessment.

Requirements Analysis

A summary of mechanical, function, sustainability and market needs

The Report

The report should comprise of a referenced, clearly written, sequential output which should address all elements expected for assessment. In particular, concept sketches should be of good quality and should be accompanied by text labels, description of how the concept functions and a consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of each concept.
