Outline of a Recommendation Report

The report you have to write for SS3 is a recommendation report.  Essentially, you need to:

Ø  consider a problem

Ø  evaluate two possible ways of solving the problem

Ø  make a recommendation of the most appropriate solution (or combination of solutions)

The structure will look like this:

Ø  Introduction

Ø  Background

Ø  Presentation of Options (2 technologies/measures/methods - depending on topic chosen)

Ø  Requirements(2 options will be evaluated under these criteria)

Ø  Comparison of Options(How well do the options satisfy the requirements?)

Ø  Conclusions

Ø  Recommendations(Say which option is most appropriate based on conclusions)

Choose one of the following report topics: 

1.      Biometrics are increasingly used to control access. Write a report giving a critical comparison of two biometric technologies for a specified situation, and make a recommendation as to which is preferable. 

2.      The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is increasingly under threat from the invasive grey species (Sciurus carolinensis)  in the UK. Write a report giving a critical comparison oftwo measureswhich could be used in the conservation of the native red squirrel in the UK and make a recommendation as to which is preferable. 

You must analyse and compare the two technologies/measures in terms of two requirements:effectiveness and cost. 

Important information:

• Your report must use sub-headings and a numbering system throughout.
• Your report must include figures.
• The report must be approximately 1500 words. Reports which do not meet the word limit may be penalized for insufficient depth or for irrelevance under the 'Content' criterion. You should aim to be within 20% of the word limit. 

Use of Sources

• In your report you can use the 3 sources provided by your class teacher andat leastfive additional academic sources from your own research. (Minimum of 8 sources.)
• You should include tablesand refer to these in the text. Data in the tables may be synthesized from different sources. Graphs and maps may also be added if appropriate.
• Support should be synthesizedas much as possible, where this is appropriate.
• You must provide in-text citations and final references for all sources you refer to in your report. You must use English language sources - you should not translate ideas from non-English sources.
