Paper Assignment for GLOB/TOLS

Choose one topic from the overall topics below. Then answer one of the questions related to the topic. The paper should give necessary background on the issue and prove your main argument.

Topics

1. Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)

a. Would the TPP be good for all the member states' economies?
b. Is the TPP an effort to counter China's economic power by uniting others?
c. Are regional trade deals good for the global economy or do they distort or complicate global trade?

2. North Korea

a. Will tensions with North Korea escalate to actual war?
b. What does it show about sanctions that so far they have not led to reverses in N. Korea's policies?
c. If the N. Korean government collapses, would it destabilize the region?

3. Myanmar

a. Will Myanmar continue on its recent path of political reforms?
b. Does Myanmar show that more change comes after policies of international engagement not punishment?
c. Should a country's domestic policies be a concern of other countries?

Details

The paper should be roughly 5-7 pages double-spaced.

Sources: Class assigned readings are a good place to start. In addition, all papers should reference a minimum of three outside sources.

You may use information found on the Web, but this will not count as one of your three sources and you should be very careful to assess the quality and biases of information found on the Web. However, if it is simply the web version of a printed source, for example New York Times online, or an article found through a periodicals database like proquest, then it can count as an outside source.
