Regulatory, Legal, and Credentialing Requirements

This unit helps you understand the process of licensing and achieving certification as an advanced practice nurse. There are many different ways this is accomplished, based on individual state requirements.

In addition to state differences, policies at the federal level may control practice or reimbursement of providers. Understanding these processes allows the advanced practice nurse to participate in activism designed to improve the practice environment.

• Describe the multiple steps in the process of certification and licensure as an APRN.

• Evaluate the U.S. health policy process in order to help APRNs be more effective in influencing policy makers.

• Examine individual and organizational political competence through exemplars.
