Our decisions are affected by what WE value. Sometimes people make different decisions because they value different things.

This activity will ask you to reflect on your values and how you spend your time. Then, you will be asked to reflect on whether you are spending your time according to your values.

Lastly, you'll be asked to write a brief story about a time you exhibited one of the traits you most value.

The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to be intentional about your decisions and to become aware of the foundations for those decisions.

To become a credible leader, you have to comprehend fully the deeply beliefs - values, principles, standards, ethics, and ideals - that drive you. You have to freely and honestly choose the principles that you will use to guide your decisions and actions. Then, you have to act in alignment with those values and express them clearly to others.

Personal Values

• Review the Personal Values List attached at the bottom of this document.

• Highlight the ten values that are most important to you.

• Cross out the ten values that are least important to you.

• Place your top ten most important and least important values in the table below, in rank order from greatest importance (1) to least importance (10).

Personal Audit

Pick one day this week to "audit" your own behavior. From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., complete the log below showing how you spend your time in 30 minute increments.

Be honest (e.g., Are you truly studying or are you watching TV with the textbook open in front of you?). Write down what you are doing on a half-hour basis in the Personal Audit form attached. A common mistake is to wait until the end of the day to fill out the form; you should keep the form with you and log your activities as the time passes.

Connect and Reflect

Review your personal audit. Answer the following questions in a paragraph.

1. How does your personal audit demonstrate that you spent your time, focus and energy?

2. Are you currently spending your time in ways that reflect your values and emphasize the priorities in your life? Explain.

3. What is one thing that you could have done on that day to more closely live according to your values?

Tell a Story

Write a true story of a time in which you demonstrated or lived according to one of your top ten values. Make sure your story is memorable and described vividly. Think of a clever title for the story that will capture your reader's attention and help your reader to remember it. Write your story below. Do not exceed the space provided.
