4.MGT312 Why Study Organizational Behavior (OB) Transcript

Speakers: Angelo Kinicki, Ph.D.

ANGELO KINICKI, PH.D.: Hi. I'm Dr. Angelo Kinicki and I'm one of the co-authors of the organizational behavior book you're using in this course. You're probably wondering why do I have to take a course like this? Well let me tell you why; because the skills that you're going to learn in this course will help you to be more effective in your personal life and your professional life.

In fact, there has been research done by the Center of Creative Leadership where they studied peoples' careers over fifty years and you know what they find is the number one reason people get fired? It is not because they lacked functional skills. It's because they lacked the soft skills. They don't know how to play well with other people in the sandbox. They don't get along with other people. They're not well liked.

In these first two chapters, you will learn what the field of what we call OB is about, some of these soft skills, why they're important, and how they can help your career. Another thing you're going to learn about in the second chapter is how your personal attitudes and values influence your behavior and it is really important to understand that for your own success.

Let's take me. I'm a guy that believes in what is called equity. Equity means you get what you deserve and that creates the way I lead and manage and teach my courses. You will learn the things that drive your behavior and I look forward to the journey you're going to have.
