Objectives:

The internationalisation process is an interesting business phenomenon. In recent decades, more and more companies have started to operate outside their domestic markets. There are also new technologies that foster the growth of internationalisation of firms from all countries around the world. It is, therefore, important for us to be able to comprehend the nature of internationalisation process of business.
In this task, you are asked to perform an international business analysis. In doing so, you will need to understand some international business theories from this course. This task, hence, will help you to be able to ‘learn' and ‘apply' key international business theories from the course to ‘real-life' multinational corporations (MNCs).

What do I need to do?

The key question for this essay is: "What is the internationalisation process of your "selected company" in the Mining industry of Mongolia

Step 1:

You need to select a multinational corporation from your industry and country. For example, if you are working on the mining industry in Mongolia, you can choose to analyse a company such as ‘Aspire Mining Limited' (a Mongolian-Australian joint venture) in Mongolia.

Step 2:

Then, you need to analyse the internationalisation of the company. In doing this you can follow the following points:

• Overview of the company as an MNC
• Country analysis
• Climate of the industry in the host country
• Internationalisation process of the firm (how?why? with whom?key
challenges?)

How - use one or two theories or models to explain then MNC's internationalisation process to this country (Uppsala, OIL, Porter's Diamond)

Why - See dunning's 4 motives for FDI Market seeking motives? Efficiency seeking? Resource seeking? Or Strategic Asset Seeking?

With whom - Which entry mode did it use? Is it a licensing agreement? Joint venture? Acquisition? Or wholly owned subsidiary?

Key challenges - Was it successful? What obstacles did the MNC encounter due to its entry mode decision and the investment climate of this country for foreign investors in this industry.

• Reflections (What have you learnt?)

• Conclusion
