Resources: Ch. 1 in Racial and Ethnic Groups and the U.S. Census Bureau American Fact Finder Web site at http://factfinder.census.gov
· Select one of the following subordinate groups from Ch. 1 of the text:
Native Americans, African Americans, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Arab Americans, Filipino Americans, Korean Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Asian Indians, Hawaiians, Irish Americans, Polish Americans, Norwegian Americans, Jewish Americans, Cuban Americans, Mexican Americans, and Puerto Ricans.

Or, because the chapter does not list all subordinate groups, you may select any other group that has a documented history in the United States.
· Identify and describe which of the following creation and consequence situations your chosen group has faced:
o Creation situations: migration, annexation, or colonization
o Consequence situations: extermination, expulsion, secession, segregation, fusion, or assimilation

· Create a fictional character as a member of the group you chose.
· Write, as if you are that fictional character, a first-person account of the creation and consequence situations of your chosen subordinate group in the United States. Write this in the form of a 700- to 1,050-word journal entry:
o In this account, pretend you are a member of the group you chose, writing in a personal journal, log, or diary.
o Describe, in narrative story style:
§ Where your group originated,
§ How it came to the United States,
§ And one or two locations in the United States where members of your group live.
· This is not a history report; this is a fictional person telling a story as if it is happening right this minute. For example, "I don't know how long we've been on this ship but our green bogs and cliffs of Ireland seem so very far away. If it weren't for the potato blight and the political infighting, I can't see a reason why hundreds of us would have left anything so beautiful."

o Be creative in your fictional descriptions, and accurate with your facts. Research your text, the Internet, or the University Library for information about your chosen group. Of particular usefulness is the People section of the U.S. Census Bureau American Fact Finder
