Module 1 Discussion - Ethical Dilemma: The Checkup

1. Post a response of at least 100 words to the ethical dilemma listed below. Make sure you support your response with evidence from the text (or another source). After your initial post, reply to the posts of at least two classmates.

The Checkup

An airline pilot goes to his regular medical checkup. The doctor discovers that he has developed a heart murmur. The pilot only has a month to go before he is eligible for retirement. The doctor knows this and wonders whether, under these unusual circumstances, she is justified in withholding the information about the pilot's condition until he can retire. If doctor releases the information now, he wouldn't get any retirement benefits. What should the doctor do?

2. Search for a current (no more than two months old) news story (article, other piece of writing, or video clip) that examines an ethical issue touched on in the Module 1 readings or discussion. Alternatively, you may search for a current event that you think relates to an ethical issue or theory from the readings or discussion.

Connect the dots in your post and show how the current news story or event relates to an ethical issue or theory identified in the text and/or discussion. Your post should include a link to the news story or event (article, other piece of writing, or video clip). In addition to sharing the link, you need to show a clear connection between the news story/event and the module material in a post of at least 150 words. Read the posts of your classmates and feel free to respond to them.

Reminder: Although you are only required to contribute a post in five of the nine modules, do not procrastinate. You may not post the same contribution as another student, so it is best to start looking for material early in the term.
