MLA formatted essay following four prompts:

1. In the novel, Emma, discuss how the author treats the theme of romantic love and marriage throughout the novel. What role does romantic love and marriage play in the novel? How does the protagonist's view of romantic love and marriage correlate to her society's view? Does Emma's coming of age change her view of love and marriage during the course of the novel? If so, how? If not, why do you believe that to be true?

2. Compare and contrast the treatment of racism in the United Stated in the novels To Kill a Mockingbird and Brown Girl Dreaming. How is racism treated similarly? How is it treated differently? In what ways do you believe the author's identity and experience (the author in context) shapes the treatment of racism in the novels?

3. In the novel Tuck Everlasting, how does the author use symbols to discuss and explain her theme of immortality? How do these symbols correlate to Winnie's coming of age? Do these symbols prepare the reader for Winnie's final decision on whether she should choose immortality?

4. Compare and contrast the coming of age of the protagonists in To Kill a Mockingbird and Tuck Everlasting. In what ways do these girls come of age similarly? How is their coming of age different? What role does family play in the coming of age of these two protagonists? What role does society play?

Each essay should be between 7 and ten pages long, with a minimum word count of 2100 words and a maximum of 2500 words. Spelling and grammar will count, as well as MLA formatting and citation. This is a safe assign assignment. If your safe assign percentage is more than 8%, points will be deducted.
