Map Key and Geological Cross Section

You have been given three maps of the Mount Todd area:

1. Topographic map
2. Geological map

Summary of requirements:
- Detailed rock descriptions
- Geological map with key updated and sample locations plotted
- Mount Todd geological cross section (with topography at VE=1)

First you need to complete the key on the geological map. Currently the key contains only sample numbers, not the names of the rocks. You need to complete this key by identifying and describing each of the rocks from the samples (photographs) you have been given. The location of each of these samples is included in the table below. First, you need to plot the locations of these samples on your geological map. Note that samples M17, M16, M7 and M18 are minerals of economic interest, not rocks. These are related to the prospects/ mines that are near the sample locations. These should be given a different symbol on your map to the rock samples and this should be added to your map key. You then need to identify and describe each of these rocks and complete the geological map key.

You need to describe each of the rocks (i.e. minerals should be identified for the key, but detailed descriptions are not required). Your descriptions should be detailed - you should note the modal mineralogy, textures and structures in each rock. A vague or incomplete description will lose marks, and may be given 0. An example of a complete description is provided below (note: photo of sample provided, this isn't one of the rocks you will look at for the case study).

Once you have completed the key, and described each of the rock samples, you can use this information to construct a geological cross section of the Mount Todd region. Firstly, using the topographic map, you need to complete a topographic profile of the Mount Todd region. This topographic profile should have no vertical exaggeration (i.e. VE = 1). The profile/ cross section should be between coordinates: (8424000 mN 192000 mE) to (8437000 mN 215000 mE). Once you have completed the topographic profile, you need to use the information contained on the geological map and the key that you have constructed to add geological detail onto the topographic profile to produce a geological cross section.
