We need a specific test statistic in numerical format, such as a mean, median, or mode, that we compute from a sample of data, and compare to an acceptable limit. If the value observed exceeds the limit value we then have justification for rejecting the null case, Ho, and accepting the alternative hypothesis, Ha.
