Case study

Mr. Gown Geter a 70-year-old male has been admitted to hospital with a two (2) day history of watery diarrhoea, fever and projectile vomiting. He has just vomited again. There are chunks of vomit on his clothing, bed linen and a small amount on the floor. He has recently had hip replacement surgery and is unable to turn himself and requires frequent repositioning.

You are the EN on duty and are required to change his bed linen and clean the contaminated areas.

Practical Assessment

1. Verbally explain to your educator which hand hygiene procedure you would perform in this situation, when and why.

2. Identify one (1) situation where you would be required to use an alcohol based rub to decontaminate your hands.

3. Demonstrate the procedures for using alcohol based rub to decontaminate hands that are not visibly soiled.

4. Verbally explain to your educator, what you would do if you had a cut or an abrasion on your hand?

5. Verbally explain to your educator, what equipment you would need to gather before commencing the clean up?

6. Assess the situation and verbally explain to your educator what PPE would be required in this situation.

7. Demonstrate the procedures for donning personal protective equipment (PPE) in sequence.

8. Demonstrate the procedures for spill cleaning.

9. Demonstrate the procedures for removing personal protective equipment (PPE) in sequence.

10. Perform routine hand washing using liquid soap and water.

11. While you were cleaning the vomitus spill, you notice a disposable razor on the floor, under the client's bed. Verbally explain to your educator when and how you would dispose of the razor.

You have approximately 20 minutes to complete this assessment.

Case study

You work in a plastic surgeons day clinic where small skin lesions are routinely removed by the surgeon. You have been asked to assist the surgeon today. This will require maintenance of the sterile technique.

Practical Assessment

1. Verbally explain to your educator which hand hygiene procedure you would perform in this situation and why?

2. Perform hand washing procedures for a surgical scrub.

3. Don sterile gown whilst maintaining sterile environment.

4. Don sterile gloves whilst maintaining sterile environment.
