Nutritional Etiology of Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome - research report

Abstract

Wernicke-Korsakoff (WKS) syndrome is a debilitating neuro-psychiatric condition that influences memory and other executive functions of an individual. The condition consists of two disorders: Wernicke Encephalopathy (WE) disorder and Korsakoff syndrome (KS). The two conditions present neuropathological symptoms, hence the combination.

The major cause of WKS is thiamine deficiency, which is often caused by excessive alcohol ingestion. WE usually precedes KS and causes the latter, it is undiagnosed or unsuccessfully treated. WKS is prevalent among adults, particularly those who abuse alcohol. The major risk factors include excessive ingestion of alcohol, thiamine deficiency in patients with cancer, and bariatric surgery.

There exist controversies regarding the occurrence of WE and KS, with some researchers indicating that either of these two conditions can precede the other. Prevention is the best strategy for KWS. Other methods to deal with the condition include sufficient thiamine intake and alcohol abstinence.
