USGS - Volcanoes: The US Geological Survey (USGS) has an amazing web site for monitoring volcanic activity and volcanic hazards. Spend a little time exploring.
On the Volcano Hazards Program homepage there is a map of current US volcano alerts and updates. What are the names and locations of volcanoes for which there is a current advisory (yellow), watch (orange) or warning (red)? For these currently active or erupting volcanoes, what type of volcano do you think each is given its tectonic setting?
USGS - Earthquakes: The USGS also has a wonderful website for earthquakes and earthquake hazards. Take a little time to explore. Lots of interesting stuff!
On the Earthquake Hazards Program homepage, click on the "Earthquake" map under "Latest Earthquakes". Change the zoom level to view the whole world. Click on the Options cogwheel symbol at the top right of the map and change the map display to show "30 Days, Magnitude 2.5+ Worldwide". Using your knowledge of plate tectonics, explain the general pattern of these recent global earthquakes. What does this map "tell you" about the frequencies and magnitudes of earthquakes?
