Problem: The 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place in 6 weeks. The current economic and political climate in Rio has potentially jeopardized the success of the games. The USOC is contemplating a bid for the 2024 games to possibly be held in Chicago. It seems that more and more cities are being swayed to commit public funds for financing professional sports stadiums and arenas, with the promise of a positive impact on the regional economy. The greater Atlanta area is still paying for the 1996 Olympics. Economic impact studies were done well in advance of participating in the bidding process to host the 1996 games to secure public funding to build and/or renovate venues for the games. Obviously, the data must have shown that the Olympic games would result in increased revenue for Atlanta and the surrounding region. You are to research the following questions and provide your response with factual data to support your position.
Required:
Question 1: What are some of the long-term economic impacts of the 1996 Games? Positive and negative.
Question 2: What are some of the lessons learned from the 1996 Games by the organizers of the Sydney games that enabled the 2000 Sydney games to be such a financial success?
