Levi C. Hubert (1904-1970) was an African American journalist who worked for various newspapers in New York City during and after the Harlem Renaissance. His essay, "The Whites Invade Harlem," is his recollection of certain aspects of life in Harlem during this era.  

Instructions:

1. Describe Hubert's characterization of white society in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance.
2. What does this essay reveal about black culture in Harlem?
3. Why does Hubert describe the Harlem Renaissance as "the golden age for Negro writers, artists, and musicians?"
4. Black writer Alain Locke used the term "New Negro" to describe individuals such as Hubert. What did that mean?
