Assignment: Analyze Sources by Using Reading Strategies

This assignment will assess Competency 2: Examine critical reading and thinking skills.

Directions: Using the topic you chose to outline in Learning Plan (the benefits or drawbacks of taking online college courses, a promising career choice, or a particular trend in fashion or music), conduct research in the NAU Online Library.

Step 1: Watch the "Library Introduction" tutorial. This tutorial gives you a broad overview of how to use the library website.

Step 2: Find at least one peer-reviewed source and at least one popular press source that relates to your topic. (Still not quite clear on what those are? Watch the "Popular vs. Scholarly" tutorial again.)

Here are some suggested locations to begin your search:
• If you're researching the benefits and drawbacks of taking online college courses, try the Education Subject Guide.
• Researching promising careers? Try Career Support.
• For fashion and music trends, start with the General Studies Subject Guide.

Provide the name and a link to each source you find.

Step 3: Choose a reading strategy from your textbook (pages 10-13). Use it as you're reading each of the sources that you found. You should use a different strategy to analyze each of your sources.
