Leadership Communication Strategies Questions -

1. Effective teams are characterized by commitment, competence and a common goal. Using either some of the team activities that you did in class or have done elsewhere as examples, describe how your team(s) did (or did not) utilize these three essentials of an effective team. Be detailed in your answer and make sure to reference your lectures and readings as support for your points. You may call upon one team activity in detail, or use more than one.

2. On your course home page, you will see a link to a jury video. Referencing your lectures and readings as support for your points, watch this video and answer the following: (A) What were the types of roles that each of the jury members played? Please give examples of how they played these roles. (B) How did this team handle conflict? Was this effective or ineffective? What might have you done similarly or differently if you were leading this team? Who was/were the leader(s) of this team and what team leadership styles did they incorporate?

3. Using example support, describe how (a) reciprocity and (b) social proof might be used in the following interpersonal communication situation.

Situation: You are the President of the student photography club. You are "selling" a new initiative to the three other members of the "student photography club executive committee" (i.e., VP, COO, CFO). Your initiative is to have bi-weekly executive committee meetings instead of monthly executive committee meetings.

4. Thinking about your group activities and assignments in this class or your job/internship, describe what insights you've gained along the lines of your own roles in groups, how the group processes proceeded (i.e., stages of Tuckman's Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning stages of group process), and how your own role in the groups helped or hindered achieving the group(s) goals. What insights, if any, have you personally gained? Provide specific examples to support your analysis.
