Larry Gladden is a middle-school football coach. With a poor turnout in his initial recruitment effort, Larry has received permission from the principal to make another recruitment pitch over the school's public address system. Making a strong appeal for all interested able-bodied boys to come out for football, Coach Gladden sets a meeting time immediately after school.

As the new prospects arrive, the coach is shocked to see Mike Brunson walk into the room. Recognizing Brunson from the special education classroom, the coach knows that he has a mild mental disability.  The others in the room know it, too. "Hi Coach!' says Mike. "You said you need strong, healthy guys - well, that's me! You know that I work out every day, and I'm in really great shape." Mike is indeed a good physical specimen. He is among the tallest of the new recruits and very muscular. However, when Mike entered the room, the other team prospects shook their heads and looked doubtful. The coach is concerned whether Mike could be accepted by his teammates, learn the plays and follow instructions.
