Lab Assignment: Global Temperature Patterns

The purpose of this lab is for you to understand global temperature patterns, more specifically, the factors affecting average air temperature and temperature range. Background Air temperature is affected by latitude, seasonality, length of day, altitude, maritime and continental locations (distance to ocean), and many other local factors. Therefore, we can roughly estimate average temperature for a specific place based on these factors even without measurements. Lower latitudes have higher temperatures than higher latitudes in the same season. Compared to continental locations, coastal locations at the same latitudes have lower temperatures in summer and higher temperatures in winter. Temperature range is also affected by the above factors, but mainly affected by latitude and distance to ocean. Tropical areas have smaller range than higher latitude area. Continental locations have larger range than costal area. Therefore, we can roughly estimate average temperature range for a specific place based on its location even without measurements. Please figure out the answers based on your understanding of the relationships between the factors and temperature. You may use online map to find out the location of each place, but please do not search the actual climate data.

1. Monthly Average Temperature Please compare the monthly average temperature between two places, only considering latitude, season, and distance to ocean. Use ">" or "<" to fill in the blank.

Tips: 1) Think out Season first, Temperature in summer > in winter.

2) If both are in the same season. Think about latitude. Temperature in lower latitude > in higher latitude.

3) If both are in the same season and in the same range of latitudes. Think about distance to ocean. In summer, Temperature in the place further away from ocean > temperature in the place closer to ocean. It is opposite in winter.

2. Annual Temperature Range Please compare average annual temperature range between two places, only considering latitude and distance to ocean. Use ">" or "<" to fill in the blank. Tips: 1) Think about latitude first. Temperature Range in higher latitude > in lowerer latitude. 2) If both are in the same range of latitudes. Think about distance to ocean. Temperature Range in the place further away from ocean > in the place closer to ocean.
