Lab Activity  (Case Study 1): Electrical Safety Standards and Codes

(IT 52 Electricity and Electronics Class; Professor Mahalik)

Electrical safety is a major concern among the persons involved in construction, operation and maintenance, manufacturing, production and process design, electrical wiring, facility and risk management, workplace safety, and regulations and standards. All technicians are aware of the potential electrical hazards present in their work environment.

They know the meaning of safety precisely. They take special training in safety related topics. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Fact Sheet provides safety information on working with generators, power lines, extension cords, and electrical equipment. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) also provides links to information about electrical safety and electrocutions.

A small lamp light with a 6-watt bulb draws about 50 milli ampere (0.05 A) of current can become fatal. Below some effects of current (in milli amps) passing through a 100 pound body. It may not be fatal below 0.1 milli amps.

An electric shock occurs on a human body with any source of voltage that is high enough to cause enough current through the muscles. So, safety is important while we work with electrical and electronics systems.
