Introducing Unlimited Vacation:

Over the last 50 years, your company has given salaried employees three weeks paid vacation. The terms are simple. Employees can take three weeks off each fiscal year as long as their work maintains excellent quality and they meet deadlines. An employee cannot roll vacation over to the next fiscal year.

In the beginning, the policy was applied effectively and met the needs of the company and employees. Employees felt valued, empowered, and motivated, which the company saw in their work.

In recent years, a change has occurred. New employees are asking for more flexible work schedules to achieve their work/life goals. To meet outside responsibilities, employees arrive late, leave early, or request an hour or two each week.

Other employees are frustrated that some employees arrive late or leave early and are not meeting work deadlines. Morale is low among the employees.

Other employees no longer take vacation because they feel they cannot be away from the office. For those taking vacation, they do not take the full three weeks allotted to them.

Having a vacation policy does have benefits for employees and the company. Vacations are meant to recharge/refuel, decrease stress, build better relationships, and improve productivity.

During the old vacation policy, many employees were still responsible for replying to email, calling into the office, or doing some work at home. By an unlimited vacation policy, employees are encouraged to take real vacations, and no work is expected of them while they are out.

Assignment:

Draft a one-page letter to the management team and provide feedback on the current vacation policy. What are the pros and cons of the policy?

Next, introduce the new policy of unlimited vacation. Provide details of the policy and the positive outcomes of unlimited vacation. Use outside research to help you build an
