Instructions

The summary component of the questions requires you to demonstrate your understanding of the terms and concepts in the textbook through the use of describing, explaining, and restating. This includes using your own words to paraphrase the materials in the textbook as well as using an occasional direct quote. Any direct quote requires quotation marks and the use of a simple internal citation at the end of the quote in the form of parentheses, the author's last name, and the page number that will look like this: (Holtzman38). Summary involves primarily answering questions that begin with "what."

The analysis component of the questions requires you to use your own independent thinking, your own ideas and arguments that are often combined with existing positions on controversial issues. Analysis requires breaking something-like a concept, theory or argument-into parts so you and your reader can understand and describe how those pans work together to make the whole. Analytic writing goes beyond the obvious to discuss questions of how and why-so ask yourself those questions as you read Your responses to these kinds of questions will require that you carefully and clearly state your argument, opinion, or -thesis" statement that states your position, using evidence from the text, other serums, and your own observations as support. You may also include your own personal experiences in the analysis insofar as they are relevant and support your thesis statement and are not generalized in such a way as to suggest that your experiences are universal.

2. How are people in the United States socialized to understand gender roles and expectations?

3. How does gender oppression affect men and women differently?

4. How does gender oppression target women and hurt men? What is the difference between being 'targeted" and being "hurt" by gender oppression?

5. What am some of the financial consequences of gender'?

6. What are some of the patterns in how prime-time television portrays men and women? What range of gender expression have you seen on television? What are some common gender stereotypes you have observed? What are some examples of characters in prime-time TV that are different from the norm and are not stereotypes? Be sure to give specific examples from television programs to support year answer.

7. What are some of the ways that emphasis on rigid and largely unattainable standards of beauty and size effects girls and women socially, politically and economically? How has that ideal of beauty and the pressure it places on girls and women affected your life?

8. Boys and men receive a lot of pressure to suppress their softer emotions and behaviors such as sadness, crying, tenderness, and vulnerability.
