Instructions for Writing a Comparison or Contrast Essay

1. Create a two-column chart, each labeled with the two items you are comparing in your essay. Write as long of a list as you can in the first column of features of that item. For example, if you are comparing and contrasting "espresso" and "coffee," your "espresso" list might include information about the beans, the brewing method, the different drinks made from espresso and the origins of those drinks.

2. Compare each item to the object of the other column. If they are the same, write a check. For example, "popular with breakfast " would be a similar item espresso and coffee share. If they are different, write the contrasting feature in the other column. For example, the brewing methods for espresso versus coffee might require a term like "high pressure," as opposed to coffee's "slow drip."

3. Count the number of similarities versus differences in your list when you are finished. Decide whether the differences are large or small. For example, the differences in an essay between coffee and espresso are small, whereas the differences between coffee and tea would be much larger. Create a format based on which scenario you have. For smaller similarities and differences, focus the first half of your essay on one item (espresso), then the second half on the other item (coffee). For larger similarities and differences, focus each paragraph on certain features of both items. For example, the first paragraph could focus on the origins of using the coffee bean as the means to make a drink, then further explain how the methods for making espresso versus drip coffee derived from that original method.

4. Write your introduction. You might want to start with an attention-grabbing opening line, such as a quote, then move into explaining what your essay is going to compare. Explain whether the differences and similarities between your two items are large or small based on what you learned in the previous step to prepare your reader for what to expect.

5. Write the body of the essay, following your outline. Include examples and details that support your statements about both items. For example, when pointing out that more drinks can be made from espresso, list the different types of drinks (latte, cappuccino, macchiato) that popular coffee houses offer using espresso.

6. Write the conclusion of your essay and state your point that you set out to make in the introduction--whether the two items are overall similar with small differences, or two very different items.
