Instruction -

This course makes frequent use of news articles and reports based on contemporary (current) events.  Based on the students are expected to review the Wall Street Journal, Business Week magazine, Economist or Financial Times on a daily/weekly basis to find discussion topics relevant to issues being studied in class. Assignments, on an individual and team basis, may be made for students to lead class discussions.

As part of class participation, each student will be prepared to lead class discussions on current news articles/events (no more than two-weeks old), and will bring to class one (1) copy of his/her typewritten discussion notes of the current news article/event, which will be given to the Instructor at the end of class. Specific topics may be assigned to be researched by students/teams for a particular class. You can organize your notes using the following format on a single, typed page:

• Your name and class date in upper right
• Source name and date
• Single-spaced and font at 12-point
• Headline or title of article
• Key topic: one or two sentences that summarize the main issue i.e., why is this news -worthy?
• What are the Society ramifications? Ethical ramifications? Environmental ramifications? Political ramifications? My position on the issue.

So, write journals with the themes of:

1. China property tax languishes as vested interests block reform

2. Consumers turn shopping into a political statement
