Informative Research Speech Assignment
Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to share ideas and information with the audience by fully describing and explaining the complete subject that is your topic. Through this speech, you will have the opportunity to be the "teacher." Therefore, this speech should inform the audience on your topic as if it were generally unknown to them, while developing its significance to them specifically, as well as to society generally, and at a depth that we will find truly educational.
Description: This speech should be 4 minutes in length. You must provide to me a comprehensive preparation outline featuring 3-4 main points, and it is required at the beginning of your speech (so, please have your own speaking/delivery outline to use during presentation of your speech). There are penalties for going over or under the required time limits. This means you will need to practice your speech sufficiently to be sure the content is developed according to the assignment guidelines.
In addition, at least five references (listed in a "work cited" section at the end of your outline). You of course, may use Wikipedia, dictionaries and encyclopedias to research your speech, although, while you may cite these searches, they do not count toward the five (5) sources required in your speech. I want to get you to using these sources as "getting started" research, with your referenced research from current and relevant magazines, newspapers, and academic journals.
You need a work cited page (added at the end of your preparation outline or on a separate page, your choice). Work cited must be in either MLA or APA style only. Doesn't matter which documentation you use, but choose one and use it consistently.
All five (5!) of your research sources must be verbally/explicitly cited within the speech as supporting material for claims that are made or data that are offered. All sources cited must be credible (see text on how to evaluate your research: Is it relevant? Current? Are the research studies large enough? Do they reflect a diverse sample? There is more, and it is IMPORTANT to know how to assess data. Your text does a good job leading you through how to assess research sources. The use of a visual aid is optional. If your topic demands a visual aid, then be sure to have one.
APA and MLA citation styles
Evaluation: The full sentence outline you hand to me is separately graded - and, you MUST have a preparation outline to me in order to present your speech. Pleyour researchase remember that your goal with delivery is extemporaneous speaking. Your speech will be graded on content, organization, use of credible sources, and delivery.
Remember, the purpose of this speech is to inform your audience on your topic, not to attempt to persuade them of what you believe.
