Individual Application: Making Strategic Selection Decisions

So many questions surround selection decisions: Should an organization hire from a large or small pool of applicants? Should it hire employees that enter the organization fully trained and experienced in job responsibilities or train on the job? Should it portray the organization or job realistically or communicate only the positive aspects? HR professionals responsible for hiring new employees have a number of employee selection strategies at their disposal. Choosing between selection strategies and making effective selection decisions are responsibilities that HR professionals must fully grasp in order to ensure a staff of employees that will contribute and grow in their jobs and remain motivated and engaged.

For this Assignment, select one of the Discussion Questions from your course text at the end of either Chapter 5 or Chapter 6. In responding to the question you choose, provide a comprehensive explanation of at least 300 words. Provide at least one resource to support your response. Be sure to cite any resources in APA formatting.

Your Assignment should be approximately 250-350 words in length.

Chapter 5, "Recruiting Talented Employees" (pp. 160-201)

In this chapter, you will explore the implementation and importance of technology in human resource management. You will also be introduced to strategic approaches for employing these tools.

Focus on the functions of HR information systems. Review and think about the examples and anecdotes provided in the chapter that illustrate the major ideas being conveyed. Consider how human resource objectives affect the purchase and use of technology for a company.
Chapter 6, "Selecting Employees Who Fit" (pp. 202-249)

In this chapter, you will explore strategic use of virtual organizations, contingent workers, and outsourcing.

Focus on the strategic variables of recruitment and selection methods. Review and think about the examples and anecdotes provided in the chapter that illustrate the major ideas being conveyed.
