Tone in Writing Assignment
In this assignment, you'll demonstrate your mastery of three styles of writing direct, persuasive and bad news. Compose the body of a letter (no letter format required) for each of the following three situations.
Thefirstyear NAIT Hospitality Management students areplanninga winery tour of the Okanagan Valley, one of the foremost viticultural regions in Canada. The one week trip will take place in March, 2014, and the practical knowledge gained will benefit the students in both their education and employability.
Direct Writing
As the organizer of this venture, you will compose a letter to go out to all your classmates, informing them of the trip. Because more than half thecost of the trip is being subsidized by the provincial government and the rest will be covered by fundraising efforts, all students are expected to participate. In fact, the trip is part of the firstyear curriculum.
A meeting will be held next Wednesday to deliver all the details, including schedule, coordination of transportation and rooming assignments.
Persuasive Writing
The fundraising idea is to hold a $450 per plate dinner for 100 in Ernest's. The reception will begin at 6:30 pm on Monday, November25, and will feature hospitality students serving champagne and hors d'oeurves. Celebrated chef Emeril Lagasse has volunteered to prepare the five course meal and comedian Dane Cook will perform for thirty minutes after dessert has been cleared.
The food and wine for the event have already been donated by local suppliers who are enthusiastic about helping students in their chosen careers.
There will be a silent auction running throughout the evening, and you hope to stock the auction table withitems worthy of this illustrious event.
Youhave been tasked with writing a letterthat will be distributed to potential benefactors, soliciting donation items. Use the AIDA format to prepare an effective persuasive letter.
Bad-news Writing
You must let your classmates know that a phylloxera infestation has made the trip impossible. Luckily, you have found out about this devastating turn of events before the fundraising dinner, but not before you have collected a closetfull of donated silent auction items.
