According to Kinicki & Williams (2016), there are five sources of power. The five sources include: legitimate power, reward power, coercive power, expert power, and referent power. Legitimate power, simply stated, is power given to someone in a leadership position. All managers and CEOs have legitimate power. They legitimately can tell you what to do is the way I like to look at it. Reward power is the power to give someone a reward. According to Kinicki & Williams, all managers also have this power. Coercive power is power as a result of being able to punish employees. Expert power comes with job experience. As you become an expert in your field, you get expert power. This power can be obtained by anyone who works hard enough. Finally there is referent power. According to Kinicki & Williams (2016), "this kind of power characterizes strong, visionary leaders who are able to persuade their followers by dint of their personality, attitudes, or background". (Kinicki & Williams, 2016, p. 445). Personally, of all of the powers, I believe that I would most like to have expert power. For me to obtain expert power, that means I have become a specialist in my job and therefore I will be able to help others and others will come to me for advice. I would rather have power in that it is something I worked for rather than boss people around all day thinking I have some type of power. According to Merchant, "Possession of expert power is normally a stepping stone to other sources of power such as legitimate power". This is a stepping stone I would like to take.
