For a graduate in Biology, it is always a curiosity to study medical reports of friends or relatives and interpret results and most importantly understand the significance of medical tests and procedures. It is an experience to visit the Emergency room of a hospital and see the daily battling of Health care professionals and patients. The role of a Respiratory Therapist is of an immense importance not only in the Emergency Room but also in General Health Care. The satisfaction of saving a life at the nick of the moment is a feat and inspirational to pursue a career as a Respiratory therapist. It is indeed a disturbing scene to see a loved one hooked to a ventilator as a support system for breathing and induced a natural interest to learn about life support systems as a child.

To start out, a sound knowledge in Biology is essential. Additionally, an aptitude in Maths is important for basic calculations. Consistent academic performance, Effective time management, exercising independent judgement, assuming responsibility for actions, work under stressful conditions, quick and agile movement are some of the personal attributes required for the role of a respiratory therapist. Good communication skills and personal care for all age groups (from infants to older patients) and a pleasing personality is a great virtue for this role.
