Assignment Details
For one live event that you attended during the course, you will write a word-processed report of between 900-1100 words (no more than 1100 please).

You should include the following specific elements in your report. Use the approx. word counts as a guide to how much space to write for each section of the report. (However, do not use bullet points in your paper. Use regular paragraphs just like in a regular academic paper).

· A title (bold and centered) that includes:
o the name of the performing ensemble or title of the event and
o the name of the performance venue and city.

· The date, event location (city and venue), and the name of the performing ensemble or artists. If there are a large number of performers, just mention the most important ones and mention the approximate number of performers (approx. 30 words).

· Brief biographical information about performers. Are they professional or non-professional? Where did they study? Do not list everything about each performer, just the highlights (no more than 30 words total for the performers).

· Musical context: Is the event part of a series or a one-off event? Organized by whom? Number of performances at this, or other venues? (approx. 20 words)

· What kind of performance space was used? Is the space designed for the performance of music, or some other activity (church, bar, theater, outdoors)? Comment on the size of the auditorium. Was it built for 20 people or 2000 people? Roughly how many people were actually there at the performance? Describe how the performers were arranged on the stage or performance area. Was there any special equipment on stage (such as microphones, amplifiers, music stands, scenery, backdrops, etc.)? (approx. 50 words)

How was lighting used? Did it change in the performance area during, before or after the performance? Did it change in the audience area during, before or after the performance? (approx. 20 words)

· How were the performers dressed? Formally or informally? Describe the clothes mentioning colors, style, any apparent uniforms, use of costumes and theatrical elements such as props (approx. 100 words)

· A summary of the repertoire performed. How many pieces were in the program? Were there one or two large pieces, several small pieces, or a mixture? What were their titles? Were any of the pieces multi-movement works (made up of smaller sections divided by silence e.g. symphonies, sonatas, concertos)? Note: The term "song" is used in music primarily to describe short pieces in classical music for a solo singer and piano or in popular music to describe a piece for solo voice and accompanying instruments. Most other pieces should be referred to as "pieces" or "works". For example, do not use the term "song" for a piece of purely instrumental music-it is best used for vocal pieces.

· If there were several pieces, was the music all by a single composer or by several? Name the composers. Include birth/death years, e.g. 1770-1827 or b.1964 (approx. 50 words)

· In what countries did the composer(s) live and work? Use the textbook to identify any composers - especially those studied in class. You may add some brief biographical information about the composers. You may also try Oxford Music Online or other recommended sources to find additional information about composers not mentioned in the textbook (approx. 25 words)

· What time period(s) were the pieces from? Use your textbook and class notes to work this out and use the specific names of time the periods. It may be helpful to summarize the main musical features of the time periods in question. What musical features of the time periods represented in the concert were demonstrated in the pieces? (approx. 50 words)

· What kinds of musical genre(s) were performed? (sonata, concerto, string quartet, art song, symphony, etc.) You may need to do a little reading to check this out. You may encounter genres we have not studied in class. Ask me if you are unsure of the genres. It is usually helpful to outline the typical features of a genre as well as mentioning the specifics of the pieces performed in the event. Were the pieces performed typical of the genre? Note: The term "song" is only used in classical music primarily to describe short pieces for solo voice and piano, and in popular music to describe a piece for solo voice and accompanying instruments. Most other pieces should be referred to as "pieces" or "works". For example, do not use the term "song" for a piece of purely instrumental music. (100 words)

· If there were any words sung/spoken who wrote the text(s)? Was it the composer or someone else? What language was the text originally written in? Was it translated in this performance? What is the text about? Is there a story being told? Or is it more reflective/poetic (for example, by contemplating some aspect of nature)? Is rhyming, alliteration or assonance used? Is the language formal or informal (slang)? Is there evidence of a verse/chorus structure or any other kind of form? (approx. 25 words)

· Describe as much as you can about the music using the vocabulary that we have been developing in class-such as keys, meter, tempo, dynamics, instruments and instrument families, the changing use of different combinations of instruments, etc. If there was a text, how did the music relate to the words? Are any of the pieces similar to any we studied in class? How so? Important Note: This section should be a major part of your report and is your chance to show how much you have learned in this class and apply it to a new situation. I am looking for your ability to accurately use the concepts, terms and information from the class in your description of the concert.) Do not be overly concerned with evaluating the concert, I am grading you on how well you can describe what took place and the connections you make to class work rather than whether you enjoyed the concert or not (350 words).

· Make some observations about the audience age range, gender balance and ethnicity. Do not under any circumstances say "people of all ages and ethnicities attended." Mention specific ethnicities. Mention the range of ages as well as the predominant age group(s). Comment on audience behavior. Were they silent? When? Did they talk? When? Did they applaud? When (after each piece, after sets of pieces, whenever they felt like it)? Did they sit or stand? When? What did they wear? Were they formal or informal? Use specific details to describe audience clothing (approx. 50 words)

· Anything else striking or interesting that you noticed.

· Concluding paragraph summarizing overall points from the paper and drawing the report to a rounded close

· Include a list of at least three sources used in the preparation of the report, including the textbook, Oxford Music Online. Use the sources recommended in the course before using any other sources (check the citation format below for examples) and do NOT use Wikipedia, MySpace, YouTube, FaceBook or other social media sites as sources.

· Note: If there is a program booklet for the event, you may use it as a source as long as you include it in your list of sources. On no account, however, should you simply copy information from the program. Instead summarize, paraphrase or use brief quotations indicating the page number and the source - just as you would for any other source.

Tip: Treat the first concert you attend as a dry run. If you are not used to writing reports on music events it is not easy to write notes and pay attention. It helps to have practice. You will probably be more successful at making notes at subsequent events that you attend, but in any case you will have three reports to choose from and can work on your best one.

Formatting Requirements

You do not need to make a title page.

Make sure your name and the course number is at the top right corner of your report with the number of words below (on the first page only).

Use Calibri or Cambria 12-point type

Use 1.5 or double spacing

Use 1.0 inch margins all round (learn how to change your 1.25 inch default margins)

Insert page numbers (top center) on all pages except the first (click on "different first page").

· Use Italic Type for titles of large works, books, movies, magazines, albums

Use "Quotation Marks" for individual songs, chapters of books, articles in a journal, tracks on an album

Note: failure to meet any of the formatting or length requirements will result in lost points.

Tip: If you are not used to writing reports on music events it is not easy to write notes and pay attention. It helps to have practice. You will probably be more successful at making notes the more events that you attend, but in any case you should attend at least one event.

Musical Work Title Formats

Generic titles, that is works that use their genre and a number as their title, are in regular type. Descriptive titles are in italics for the main work title and in quotation marks for movement or section titles.

Draft Report

You are required to submit a draft of your report (see Blackboard for draft and final deadlines). After you submit a draft, I will make comments and return it to you. After making revisions, you will then submit your final report. I will not review reports submitted after the draft deadline. If you choose to attend an event less than 2 weeks before the end of the semester, you may not have time to submit a draft and obtain feedback - so plan ahead. Save your file on your hard drive or jump drive before you send it and always keep a copy of your report in case you need to resubmit it for any reason.

Writer's Studio

You may also be required to visit the Writer's Studio at least once during the writing of this assignment. You will lose points if you fail to schedule and attend a session at the Writer's Studio before the final deadline. Final revised reports are due on or before the time and date of the final exam. If you do not submit a draft, you are severely limiting your ability to attain a good score for this assignment.

Report Checklist

· Did you submit a draft to the instructor to get feedback?

· Did the event take place during the course?

· Is your name, the course number, and the number of words in the top right corner (of the first page only)?

· Have you used the event title or name of the performing ensemble and the venue as the title of your report (bold and centered)?

· Have you included the date and time of the event?

· Is the report between 900-1100 words?

· Are the formatting requirements correct?

· Are there page numbers (top center) on every page except the first?

· Have you included details of the auditorium?

· Have you included repertoire information, especially the names of composers, the countries they are from, and the names of their time periods?

· Have you included information on the genres?

· Have you included the musical details section?

· Did you also include something about the audience profile and audience behavior?

· Have you included all the elements required in the report?

· Are there clear paragraphs and a definite concluding section to the report?

· Did you keep a consistent tense throughout the report? (the past tense is best for reports of this kind)

· Did you consult the textbook (or other approved websites)?

· Did you correctly cite all quotations used in the report?

· Have you included a list of at least three sources used (including the course textbook) correctly cited using the models below?

· Did you use spell-check and correct international characters (such as ‘é')?

· Have you printed out a draft of your report, read it out loud, read it again for errors and made revisions?

· Have you visited the Writer's Studio?

· If this is the final version, did you incorporate all corrections/suggestions from your draft and your visit to the Writer's Studio?

· Have you made revisions and printed out a second, revised copy?

· Have you saved a copy on your hard drive or jump drive?

**An Important Point to Note**

On no account should you copy ANYTHING from the Internet or any other printed source in your paper without a correct citation. This counts as PLAIGARISM and you could fail the entire project if you do this. I am much more interested in what YOU have to say about the music. For example, the best time to use a quote is if it is absolutely relevant to a specific point in your paper. And then it should be no more than one, fairly short sentence, and you MUST use quotation marks and a proper citation format. If you do not know how to cite correctly, ask a librarian.

The following examples are based on University of Chicago style.
