If you are a scientist, and you want to do research, and you discover new things, perhaps build something that requires a patent, or maybe find a cure for a disease, it is your discovery isn't it?  Or is it?  Isn't it your constitutional right to own your own intellectual property?

As a scientist, you research not only for your own benefit, but also that of the college or university.  While there, you have access to myriad resources at your research disposal that you wouldn't otherwise have (or afford) on your own.  In fairness, it wouldn't be easy to be taken seriously in a scientific community if you weren't associated with a major college or university.  Anyway, in return for access to such resources, the university or college has rights to some of your property.  Is that fair?  Does that violate your constitutional right?  Your first amendment rights?
