Identify a social issue you see in Latvia. Social issue can be widely defined as problems that have a negative impact on society in general. These could include but not limited to students dropping out of high school before graduating, alcoholism, garbage on the streets, smoking around children, lack of recycling, or lack of healthy eating. Or, maybe you are aware of other issues that you feel could negatively impact Latvian society: corruption, inter cultural dialogue etc.

How could your experience, coupled with what you have learned around consumer behaviour or marketing be used to “nudge” the issue towards positive outcomes.

Links have been provided to examples of how behavioural insights have been used to influence positive societal change.

Use the outline below to guide your submission. Your submission should be no more than 1 double sided A4 page long with 12 point font.

Identify the problem. Explain in few sentences what you know about the issue and what is the negative consequence in society.

Explain your proposed approach to influencing individual or collective behaviour. What is the theory behind your suggestion? What behaviour are you hoping it will change?

Provide examples of how this approach has worked in other places or other contexts (for example has the approach worked in selling products, services, or used by other governments to create change).

We are not looking for detailed citations but you should provide some references for examples you are providing. There is a total of 50 points for this assignment.

How clearly you communicate your understanding of the social issue (10 points)

How clearly you identify the potential “nudge” or “marketing” that you think will influence behaviour. (10 points)

Your rationale for why you are using this approach and how behavioural change could be measured. (20 points)

Provide real life examples of how this approach has been used. If you cannot find examples of the approach you are recommending, then explain why that might be the case [Do you think no one has been smart enough to come up with the idea? Or, could there be some challenges to implementation or measuring results?]
