I think humor, when used in an appropriate way, can appeal to very diverse groups of people, without alienating anyone, and act as a cultural bridge. A good example of this would be the Walmart commercials that aired about a year ago. They included a mix of genders, ages, races, and cultures in their tv commercials, and focused on universally funny topics like children and household mishaps.

As we know, humor can also be offensive, however. Recently PopChips ran (and subsequently pulled) a commercial where actor Ashton Kutcher wore "brown face" and pretended to be an Indian person. Not only did this generate a lot of negative media attention, it also offended Indian American consumers.
