I need to do a cultural immersion activity for myself then write about it. The experience should expose me to a culture I may encounter in my current or future classroom and should help me develop a deeper understanding of this culture's world view, so that I am better able to contrast diverse perspectives with my own cultural filters. My goal should be to develop a deeper socio-cultural understanding of students who may stem from this background.
Examples of cultural immersion activites include but are not limited to:
1.Visit a Middle Eastern, Asian, Inian, or Mexican Market and prepare a meal using the ingredients you find.
2.Watch adn critique a Bollywood film, viewing it (as much as is possible) from a non-western perspective.
3.Change your news source to a Middle Eastern network like AL Jazeera for a week.
4.Visit a cultural center interfaith dialogue or spend an afternoon with someone of another culture/religion/ethnicity to learn more about that world view.
5. Familiarize yourself with and listen to the latest Latino, Hip Hop, or pop-music that from the culture you are studying.
After completing one of the recommened activities above, or a similarly enriching cultural immersion activity, summarize briefly what you did and what you leaned from it. You must fully describe your activity and explain how it truly is a cultural immerison experience. Then, analyze how this experience has changed or enhanced your understanding of the culture in question by deconstructing the views and opinions you held as result of the knowledge acquired through this experince.
