There are four basic pipe materials used in sprinkler systems which include: Copper, Ferrous metal, Plastic and galvanized steel. The type of material will be selected based on cost, friction loss , appearance, light weight and easy to install. Black steel pipe or also called Ferrous metal is the most common pipe used because it is strong, durable has a long life expectancy but will corrode over time. With a high melting point of 2,700, steel pipe can withstand high heat conditions. The next type is copper. It's light weight, is highly resistant to corrosion, low in friction loss and neat in appearance, but is expensive. The next type is plastic or PVC. It is the lightest and easiest to install. If this type of material is selected, it must be listed for use in sprinkler systems. Lastly Galvanized steel pipe is a sink coated pipe that resists corrosion. These pipes are joined by the use of threaded fittings. Sturzenbecker, M. J., Adams, B., & Burnside, E. (Eds.). (2012). Fire detection and suppression systems (4th ed.). Stillwater, OK: Fire Protection Publication. What are the reasons behind a building owners installation of an automatic sprinkler system? What are the benefits of having an automatic sprinkler system installed in a building? The biggest reason for sprinkler compliance is because of NFPA 13 which mandates the use of sprinklers in occupied buildings. (Sturzenbecker, (2012) When sprinklers are installed properly it reduces the chances of death from one-third to two-thirds. Property losses are cut in half.(Sturzenbecker, (2012) If fires do occur in a sprinklered building it is usually contained with 1-2 sprinklers. When sprinklers are properly maintained and installed correctly are effective 97% of the time. (Sturzenbecker, (2012) Another benefit of having sprinkler is reduced insurance costs. Another reason for having sprinklers in a building is they respond faster then the fire department does. A normal sprinkler will activate within 60 seconds when the fire is in the growth stage and will be extinguish the fire saving property and lives.
