Human Resource Management Self-Reflective Paper on Leadership and Followership Capabilities

This is an AACSB assignment embedded in this course and aims at helping our students demonstrate the capabilities they have developed to perform effectively in team environments.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this assignment, students are expected to:

1. Gain a deeper self-awareness through the exploration of their identity, values, and experiences of leadership and followership skills.

2. Design a specific, realistic and achievable development plan that will allow them to lead and follow in team environments.

Paper Structure: Try to have the following sections in your paper. Make sure to use effectively all the articles discussed in class or available to you on Blackboard in the folder "Readings", Sub-folder "leadership and followership". While this paper is self-reflective, supporting your personal reflection with arguments from the extant research is highly recommended and desirable.

1. Your Perception of Leadership and Followership

  • What is your understanding of leadership and followership?
  • How have your family upbringing and background influenced your perception of leadership?
  • When was the first time you realized your leadership potential?
  • Who and what experiences have influenced your values and philosophies?
  • How have mentors, exemplary leaders and critical incidents in your life transformed you and your views of leadership?
  • Who do you most look up to now? What qualities/behaviors do you admire in that person?
  • As an HR professional or a line manager, how will HR competencies help you become a better leader or follower? How would they enhance your teamwork effectiveness?

2. Self-assessment (what?)

Describe situations from class, professional and personal settings when you practiced leadership roles in a team environment

  • What leadership behaviors did you demonstrate? How did they impact your team and your wider context?
  • What challenges/problems did you face and how did you overcome them?
  • Did race, gender, religion, national origin or ability have an impact on your leadership role? How so?
  • What role do ethics play in your teamwork experiences? If unethical actions occurred, did the teams you worked with address them? Why or why not?
  • How did you handle controversy or competing ideas?
  • How did you foster communication and collaboration among team members?
  • How did you make decisions as a team?
  • What has been your best leadership experience? What factors have made it the best?
  • What has been your worst leadership experience? What factors have made it the worst?
  • Please take the quick self-assessment below to find out whether you are a team player who enjoys working with teams.

  • What has been your best followership experience? What factors have made it the best?
  • What has been your worst followership experience? What factors have made it the worst?
  • What role did you play in the team and how did you contribute to the leadership effort? (the figure below provides the different roles of team members)
  • How did your values and beliefs shape your experience as a follower?

3. Critical Reflection (So What?)

Reflect on what you learned about yourself in relation to your capacity to demonstrate good leadership and followership. Reflect on what you see as your leadership/followership strengths and weaknesses and how you will take advantage of both in the future.

4. Personal Development Plan (Now What?)

Now that you have assessed your leadership and followership capabilities and reflected on them, identify specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound developmental goals and indicate the actions that you will undertake to achieve them. Explain how these goals will help you become a better leader and follower.
