Distinguish Critical Approaches

Prepare: Prior to completing this discussion, read the Critical Literary Theories handout.

Reflect: In the Critical Literary Theories handout, four different kinds of critical approaches are presented. Consider which of the four theories you find most interesting as a means for understanding literature.

Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. The minimum word count does not include references. Choose two of those critical approaches and address the points below.

Describe each critical approach in detail.

Compare and/or contrast the two critical approaches. How are they different and similar?

Determine which critical approach you find most useful for examining the conflicts and meaning in literature.

Explain why you chose this particular approach as the most useful. Why does it appeal to you?

Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmates' initial posts. Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following points:

Do you agree with your classmates' perspectives? Why, or why not? Be specific.

Ask a specific question to encourage further discussion on the topic.

Challenge your classmates' interpretation of literature and/or point of view.

Do a small amount of research and share what you learn with your peers about the topic discussed in this post.

Discussion 1-RG Rocio Garcia 8/20/2016 4:58:29 PM

This week we learned about four critical approaches when analyzing literature.

1. Formalism or New criticism

This means literature's meaning is only viewed inside of text. Meaning that the time period, author's bio, or any other outside influence interprets the piece of literatures theme or content.

2. Reader Response Criticism

Analyzing with this criticism is very one on one with the reader. The reader analyzes based on their own personal experience, culture, religion, and opinion.

3. Psychoanalytical criticism

Literature is analyzed according to the character psychology. This means everything is based on the piece of literatures character including their motivation, behavior, and actions.

4. New Historian Criticism

One would analyze the time period the piece of literature was written in to see how it influenced the writer's story.

5. Post Colonial Criticism

Analyze literature through issues caused by centurial colonialism.

Two forms of critical approaches I will analyze are formalism and reader response criticism. Formalism involves the reader only focusing on what is written on paper the reader is not to do any outside research about the author's bio or social era. This is quite the opposite with reader response criticism. Reader response allows the reader to research beyond the text based on their culture, religion, and own experiences. It is a more personal form of approach.

I find reader response to be the easiest to use when analyzing works of literature. This form allows you the ability to think beyond the actual text written and opening a horizon of possibilities. By using this form of approach I am able of finding multiple ways of understanding the theme and point of view the author is trying to express.
